The Denver Public Library is pleased to sponsor its 37th competitive Dr. E.H. Stumme Art and Photography  Show. The Art Show will be held in the Community Room of the Denver Community Center. Artists can submit original work in various mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolor, drawing, digital, and photography.  See rules below.



1. All entries must be delivered to the Denver Public Library at 100 Washington Street in Denver, Iowa. Participants may bring in their artwork during library business hours beginning October 30 – November 8. All entries must be in by 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8 to ensure a space in show.  The Library will be closed on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11 for Veteran’s Day. This year the show will start on Monday, November 13 and run until the Artist Reception is over Thursday evening, November 16.  Library business hours are: Monday, 10:00 to 7:00 p.m.; Tuesday & Wednesday 10:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, 10:00 to 8:00 p.m.; Friday, 10:00 to 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 9:00 to 12:00 p.m. This year’s show will run from November 12 -17.

2. There is no entry fee. Works may be sold, but not removed from the show prior to its conclusion. Entries are limited to two per person.  All entries, including photography, must be framed and ready to be hung. Exceptions are made for student work, which  can be matted only.

3. Each entry must be the original work (no prints) of the entrant and must have been completed within the past two years.

4. Entry size must not exceed 48 inches in any direction (unframed).

5. IDENTIFICATION TAGS are to be attached to the FRONT and BACK of the picture. Please attach your tags before bringing them to the library.

6. The library will use customary care in handling entries but will in no case be responsible for the loss or damage of any artwork.   Prints may be left in bags until hanging.  Please mark your bag with your name.

7. Judging will take place after the library closes on Monday, November 13.  Winners will receive ribbons. Voting for the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD will be November 13-16.  The public is allowed one vote for their favorite artwork. People’s Choice will be announced at the Artist Reception on Thursday evening, Nov. 16.

8. Entries must be marked NFS, if not for sale, but with the value listed in parenthesis.  If entry is for sale, indicate asking price on the IDENTIFICATION TAG.

9. Any art purchased by the Denver Public Library will become property of the library and will be made available to our patrons for check out.  The library reserves the right to display, check out, and withdraw or sell the art work without the artist notification.

10. The library staff is responsible for the setup and arrangement of the artwork. Setup will take place Thursday, November 9.

11. Due to space limitation, the judges will select from the entries of art work that is hung.  Every effort will be made to make sure each piece of art is displayed at the show.

12. Deadline for picking up artwork is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8.

 Artist Reception


A reception for the artists and judges will be held in the Community Room on Thursday, November 16, from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.  This event is open to all artists and the public.  Coffee, punch, and cookies will be served. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit with other artists and enjoy the art show.  Artists will be allowed to take their art work home with them after the Artist Reception is over for the evening. Please mark your art work as one of the following categories:





            Painting - oil or other opaque mediums (acrylics)

            Painting - watercolor or other transparent medium

            Drawing - ink or pencils or pastels or other medium (prismacolor)

            Mixed medium (example - ink & paint combined)

            Digital art –an original work in which the original image was executed by the artist using a computer (only images produced by the participating artist are acceptable - participants’ drawings or paintings).




            Professional – person who has participated in gallery showings and has regularly

            sold their work or has been commissioned for work

            Amateur – person who engages in art as a hobby or pastime

            Novice - first entry in any art show

            Student - Secondary

            Student - Elementary
